More and more people are migrating to cities in search of a better life, but city life can be extremely difficult. Explain some of the difficulties of living in a city. How can governments make urban life better for everyone?

Cities are often seen as places of opportunity, but there are also some major drawbacks of living in a large metropolis. In my opinion, governments could do much more to improve city life for the average inhabitant.

The main problem for anyone who hopes to migrate to a large city is that the cost of living is likely to be much higher than it is in a small town or village. Inhabitants of cities have to pay higher prices for housing, transport, and even food. Another issue is that urban areas tend to suffer from social problems such as high crime and poverty rates in comparison with rural areas. Furthermore, the air quality in cities is often poor, due to pollution from traffic, and the streets and public transport systems are usually overcrowded. As a result, city life can be unhealthy and stressful.

However, there are various steps that governments could take to tackle these problems. Firstly, they could invest money in the building of affordable or social housing to reduce the cost of living. Secondly, politicians have the power to ban vehicles from city centres and promote the use of cleaner public transport, which would help to reduce both air pollution and traffic congestion. In London, for example, the introduction of a congestion charge for drivers has helped to curb the traffic problem. A third option would be to develop provincial towns and rural areas, by moving industry and jobs to those regions, in order to reduce the pressure on major cities.

In conclusion, governments could certainly implement a range of measures to enhance the quality of life for all city residents.(273 words, band 9)

Some people say modern children's games do not develop a wide range of skills , while traditional games can be much better for developing such skills. To what extent do you agree or disagree ?

While the industry of electronic game is booming by leaps and bounds with more and more people enjoying the fun it brings, some start to proclaim that it develops a smaller range of skills than the traditional games, with which I disagree, for it sounds just like another story of the backward who is intimidated by what is new.

First, let’s see what is the most possible reason we can expect from their saying. Traditional games engage more body participation and therefore, more physical training, while the modern ones do not, but is that true? With the device of latest technique, modern games could happen within a small room in virtual reality and child can really do the movement of wielding a badminton bat or even a sword anywhere, feeling it rather than just seeing it on the screen, with the sensors held in hand. In this way, you don’t have to worry that kids will sit all day dropping off their physical abilities. But modern games can do more goods with children’s skills than that. While traditional games are typically composed of a playground, a ball or some other thingies, a certain number of people and rules, modern games have manoeuvred these elements in a variety of form with sci-tech innovations and the help of other professions. Kids who are playing modern games are immersed in the vivid animation of art, the considerate interaction designs, a storytelling plot, the strategies of cooperation with other players, and way more than these. How could they be blind and deaf to these all if they are not picking up skills along the course of game.

To conclude, I think those who are clamoring, carping and blaring about children’s lack of gains from modern games are only lacked of imagination, that is, the imagination of future and the development of technologies.

话题Some people say modern children's games do not develop a wide range of skills , while traditional games can be much better for developing such skills. To what extent do you agree or disagree ?

The mainstream view of gaming has become less curmudgeonly in recent years;we no longer regard games as a horrible evil demon trying to corrupt our children. However, there is a divergence of people’s opinions about whether traditional games are more likely to foster children’s skills than the modern games

Undeniably, in the contemporary life exist a few old games providing children with certain valuable skills that can hardly be offered by the modern consoles. Specifically, the vast majority of teenagers nowadays indulge into a series of virtual games online, such as electronic-based football playing, but never ever do those gaming attendees pick up the real skills like shooting on fields in reality, simply for the lack of exercise physically involved.

However, I firmly insist that current games give the young more chances to tap their potential capabilities to reap more profitable skills. The skills gained from the outdated games can be almost achieved in modern ones, as nowadays most traditional games like playing chess, and multi-player games are more accessible online. Thanks to the current gaming with less time and geographical restriction, teens are more likely to participate in, and sometimes lead, a more diverse, mixed-age team, enabling them to adjust to different surrounding.

More importantly, modern gaming is better in helping introverted children develop interpersonal skills and enlarge their friend-zone. Regardless of the gender, race, and religion, those children with mild learning disabilities can better express their personalities freely and even cooperate with others in modern video games.

Furthermore, Recent years have witnessed a large number of video games designed to serve the educational purpose. the cutting-edge technology gives the current gaming an advantage in its content and forms, which is largely conducive to language learning skills, in comparison with the old counterparts.by the integration of animations and sound recording into the current video games, children at an early age are more interested in and feel much easier to pick up a new kind of language, which all may be rarely realized in outmoded gaming.

In conclusion, from my perspective, the modern games that are constantly being updated and advancing so fast prepare children better to foster more skills than the old ones

Some people think that universities should not provide so much theoretical knowledge but give more practical training throughout their courses.

To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?

Model Answer:

In the past, a majority of academics have held the opinion that universities should only offer a theoretically-based approach to teaching throughout their courses, as opposed to the more recent trend towards empirical acquisition of knowledge involving more “hands on” experience. Is this the most effective way for students to learn vital academic information while undertaking their degrees? Undoubtedly, advantages and disadvantages of both academic learning styles have to be evaluated.

Firstly, on the one hand, despite being the more traditional educational approach, learning from theory in relevant academic discourses to identify established knowledge allows us to gain a professional insight. For example, students can easily identify facts and opinions from past discourses. In addition, students acquire knowledge more easily when given relative theoretical examples to build upon. For instance, in subjects such as history or sociology, studying textbook examples allows students to unravel complex academic theories which they could expand on. Alternatively, there are some disadvantages for students.

On the other hand, there is no doubt that students could find themselves reading tedious and monotonous academic papers. For instance, university degrees involving the evaluation of numerous ‘long-winded’ academic discourses provide little inspiration for students, discouraging enthusiasm. Obviously, interest can be stimulated through empirical research in class. By this I mean that ‘the human brain learns best by doing’. Although time-consuming, there is no substitute for learning from making mistakes.

In conclusion, while both approaches have benefits and drawbacks in our ever-changing academic world, I honestly believe that a more practical approach promotes a stronger acquisition of academic knowledge. In spite of the comprehensive nature which theoretical teaching can possibly provide, practical learning equals more positive learning for future generations.

It is widely believed that children of different levels of intelligence should be taught together, while others think that more intelligent children should be taught separately.

Discuss and present your own opinion.

Model Answer:

In past educational institutions, children have been taught together based on age regardless of intellectual ability displayed at school. Alternatively, a large proportion of the population believes there should be a strong move towards the separation of children of different intellectual capabilities in current educational institutions. From my own educational perspective, I honestly believe that younger students possessing higher intelligence levels than their peers ought to be separated into alternative levels based on their gift, for a number of reasons.

Admittedly, although young learners have the chance to learn a lot from associating with classmates their own age, it is widely believed that such a process isn’t considered to be vital for a healthy educational upbringing. The argument for intellectual separation holds some strong advantages. Firstly, by allocating students to classes based on levels of intelligence, high achievers have the opportunity to excel in a way that they couldn’t in a normal class. Owing to the fact that they can be placed into an unrestricted educational environment, students can excel with intellectual freedom.

Secondly, there is a strong argument in regards to inhibiting a child’s intellectual growth by restricting them from moving above their peers if their mental capability permits. Why should we limit the intelligence of our future generation? For instance, many of today’s highly successful artists and entrepreneurs in the world have come from an unrestricted educational background and have been allowed to explore their mind and careers to the fullest extent.

In conclusion, although I believe an educational environment for young learners should promote equal opportunity, I honestly think that creating a more liberal environment which enhances the learning capabilities of intellectually-gifted children will not only benefit individual’s careers but future society as a whole.

Some people say that older people should live with their adult children. Others say that they shouldnt. Which do you think is good practice.

One of the topics in daily life is whether or not the older people should live with their adult children. My answer is the question is that it is better for them not to.

Firstly, people of different ages have different ways of life. The old people like a quiet, peaceful and regular life whereas the young prefer noises, activities and unrestrained enjoyment. If they live together, old may feel that they are always disturbed and the young may feel that they are often handicapped.

Secondly, people of different generations have different views and values. What is quite normal to the parents may seem to be old-fashioned or wrong to the children. When they live together, they may disagree on matters ranging from minor domestic matters to national and international issues. Consequently, family life may be unpleasant or even unbearable to both the old and the young.

Last but not the least, adult children, like their parents, love independence and freedom, but their parents still take them as children and unintentionally interfere in their affairs. The situation will be worse if the adult children are already married. In this case, the children have already built a new and closed world and any outside interference may lead to conflicts.
